Cheapskate - Could You Create Your Unique Website Business for Free?
56
Fantastic. You have the perfect product/service for your home based website business. Now, you can't wait to have it explode throughout the Internet. But wait, you discover you have little or no money. What to do? Mortgage the house? Oops, you are renting. Ah, borrow on your credit cards but the nagging interest rates and the remotest possibility that your product/service won't sell right away stops you in your tracks. Remembering it is a business, you start plotting each step involved in creating your website through promoting on the Internet. You come up with an outline of each process involved. Your plan is as follows:
Your Plan
1 - Pick a great website domain name. Settle on five terms or phrases that best describe the domain you're seeking. Be unique and never choose domains that are simply the plural, hyphenated or misspelled version of an existing domain. An easily typed domain name to bypass problems with spelling, length or the use of forgettable words or sounds. Make it a name that can be easily remembered, so people can tell others about the site. Try a short name because it easier to remember and put on business cards. Visit copyright.gov and search before you buy to avoid any copyright infringing. Avoid hyphens and numbers because they are hard to remember and explain. Picking a website name is a challenge, so try something easy for your customers to relate your business with. Be creative yet simple.
2 - Registering the website domain name. There are countless domain name registrars. Domain naming involves registering the name you want with an organization called ICANN. Some web hosts will register it and pay for the name for free, while others will do it for you but you'll have to pay the registrar fees. You may want to try looking at SE's like Google, Yahoo and Bing to see if they offer free sites that might appeal to you. Using this method may throw a monkey wrench on your domain name and its uniqueness.
3 - Website hosting.
Website servers and space required to host your website. Posting the email addresses you need. From Wikipedia we get this definition: "The most basic is web page and small-scale file hosting, where files can be uploaded via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or a Web interface. The files are usually delivered to the Web "as is" or with little processing. Many Internet service providers (ISPs) offer this service free to their subscribers. People can also obtain Web page hosting from other, alternative service providers. Personal web site hosting is typically free, advertisement-sponsored, or inexpensive. Business web site hosting often has a higher expense." Again, we have an infinite number of website hosting services.
4 - Set up DNS
What the heck is DNS? It's a network setting for the Internet that tells everyone which server your website is on and where to find it. You can get a better explanation from : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738619%28WS.10%29.aspx
5 - Website design.
Again we got to Wikipedia for the definition for web design as follows: "Web design is the process of planning and creating a website. Text, images, digital media and interactive elements are shaped by the web designer to produce the page seen on the web browser.[1] Web designers utilize markup language, most notably HTML for structure and CSS for presentation to develop pages that can be read by web browsers." and "As a whole, the process of web design includes conceptualization, planning, producing, post-production, research, advertising as well as media control that is applied to the pages within the site by the designer or group of designers with a specific purpose. The site itself can be divided into its main page, also known as the home page, which cites the main objective as well as highlights of the site's daily updates; which also contains hyperlinks that functions to direct viewers to a designated page within the site's domain." There are plenty a website design companies who will help you design your site. However, your website may already have some design tools from the web host and the website itself. This is where you create your Picasso or Rembrandt. Let your creative juices flow as to what appels to you.
6 - Upload the finished website to the host.
When you're pleased with your website design, upload it to your Web host. The steps for uploading your website depend on your Web host or your design program. You need to know the instructions for your specific situation. When you successfully complete this step, you'll have your website up and running. More technical jargon to go through. Nothing exciting there.
7 - Register the website with the search engines
Register your website with all major search engines for free. To do this for google go to : http://www.google.com/addurl/
There are other search engines that also have free submissions (Yahoo, etc.) simply do a Internet search for them and submit your URL.
8 - Publicize, promote, sell!
This is the most important step. Letting everyone know you have a website. Develop ideas on how to promote your website. You can promote by putting your website name on antenna balls, pens, business cards or just about anything you can afford to giveaway for free. Blog at various blog sites. Write articles for submission at ezine sites.Add your website on comments to blog sites(not always recommended) you visit. Pay for adwords on google or any similar site. Any or all of the social media sites(be very careful here). Newspaper, television, radio and store ads. You may want to get an old fashion rubber stamp with your website on it. Make an ad video promoting your site on YouTube. DO NOT rely on the search engines making your website a success.
Solving the Dilemma
Whew, there is more to this than you thought. How do you decide which website name? How much for the domain name? How much to register at iCANN? What's the going rate for website hosting per month/year? Where did DNS come from? How can you learn website designing and does it cost much? How do you upload your newly finished website to the host? How much to register your website on the search engines or how can you do it for free? Great. Now, you have to worry how to promote, advertise and sell your website. Boy, you could sure use a group of professionals to help mentor you. For free? Surely, all this is going to cost a ton of money. Where can you get help?
